Risk Management is a branch within the Financial Services Industry. To work in this line, a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and often an MBA is required. A background in Management Science is helpful as is prior work experience in market trading. Law, insurance, compliance and accounting experience is also considered valuable for those wishing to further their education in Risk Management in international universities.

There are many different types of risk that exist, or occur in a workplace which can be mitigated. Common risks include things like accidents in the workplace or fires, tornadoes/hurricanes/cyclones, earthquakes, and other natural calamities. It can also include legal risks like fraud, theft, and sexual harassment cases. Risks associated to business practices, volatile financial markets, failures in projects, credit risks, or the security and storage of data.

The idea behind risk management is to protect businesses from being preyed upon. Many business risk management plans may focus on keeping the company viable and reducing financial risks. However, risk management is also designed to protect the employees, customers, and general public from negative events like fires or acts of terrorism that may affect them. Risk management practices are also about preserving the physical facilities, data, records.

Since risk is the primary concern in any business, Risk Management naturally emerges as a valued function in any industry. It is in fact a crucial job especially during crisis and unwarranted times. It's no wonder that among all genres of financial managers, risk managers are among the highest paid, globally. And most needed.

If one wishes to take one's financial career to the next level, entry into Risk Management should begin with a good course. The two main certifications for Risk Management are for a) Financial Risk Managers b) Professional Risk Managers.
